The 21st edition of Contraceptive Technology is comprehensive and exhaustive, but clearly written, organized and referenced. Its 989 pages are a reflection of the advances since the 30 page first edition of Contraceptive Technology from 1971.
Contraceptive Technology 21stThe 10 editors and 46 authors of the new CT21 have paid attention to details, as required by such an important scientific source, but they have not neglected readability and style. The authors represent a generation of reproductive health professionals who have benefited from Contraceptive Technology, the large annual Contraceptive Technology Conference, and often attendance at Doctor Hatcher's summer courses at Emory. They represent a new generation of Family Planning Fellowship trained specialists and Ryan Program trained Obstetricians Gynecologists.
The Fellowship in Family Planning program in my department includes Contraceptive Technology in its curriculum and will continue to require its fellows to read the new edition chapter by chapter over two years. I commend this book to students of reproductive health, family planning, and gender and health at the undergraduate level and in professional schools of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health and, yes, even Public policy. I will be using it in my classes and with my medical students and residents this year. It will give them the information needed to understand the best practices and policies for reproductive health, and to care for their patients, themselves and their communities.
